Electrical Safety: Is Your Home Speaking to You?

The signs are everywhere. Buzzing noises, breakers tripping, the smell of plastic melting, the smoky look on an outlet with wiring gone wrong. It seems that unless we are dealing with something not working properly that is obvious and uncomfortable, we’re not really aware of what electrical hazards can be lurking in the corners and otherwise in our business and home.

Such mysteries are meant to be solved, and as soon as possible, since, if we don’t know what’s going on, ignorance is not bliss–it could be downright dangerous, leading to electrical shock and fires that could be avoided (and we all want to avoid fires, don’t we?).

It pays to look at what may be going on, whether it’s right in front of you or behind the walls (instead of behind the scenes…). Sometimes we may wonder if what we are doing with that appliance is ok. Do we ask ourselves, “Is this safe?” as we use that extension cord to plug in that appliance, or when we leave that cell phone plugged in in the bathroom when it would be safer to plug it in where there is a dryer climate.

Awareness of our usage of electrical goods that we may take for granted everyday is key toward preventing disaster before it starts.

So really take a look around and see what electrical hazards you may have been missing; don’t take Electrical Safety for granted. Whether you need an upgrade or have an outlet added or simply move that space heater to a better spot, taking action for prevention is a must. And sometimes a really small action can make all the difference!

As you take proactive steps toward electrical safety, remember you could be saving a life…and it could be your own!
