Electrical Safety: Avoid a Christmas Cat-astrophy!

Welcome back to our Electrical Safety blog here at Bill’s Quality Electric, LLC, where we share electrical safety and fire prevention tips for your home and business featuring Story Telling Suzie and her son Michael. For this post, Suzie and Michael are decorating for Christmas and they have a furry issue to deal with concerning their cat Shadow. Continue reading to find how they solve their dilemma and Stay Electrically Safe and Smart!

“Hey, Michael, could you pull out the box of Christmas Decor out of the closet for me? I’m just about ready to get things sorted out.”

“Sure, Mom.” Michael opened the closet and saw the Big Box of famous decorations his mom has kept over the years and memories came flooding back. He smiled and pulled it out and placed it on the kitchen counter.

“Thank you, my dear.” Suzie gave her son a peck on the cheek. He smiled again. “You’re in a good mood, Mom.”

She smiled. “Yes, I am. I love decorating as you well know, and today is no exception.” She had a twinkle in her eye. She opened the box and started pulling out items one by one.

“Hey Mom, should we be doing anything differently now that we have Shadow? Not sure if there are any hazards we should be aware of.” Michael looked her way with a mix of curiosity and concern.

“Well, I’m glad you’re thinking ahead, my son. And yes, we do need to consider if we need to make any changes from last year. I’m open to change things up anyway to keep it fun!” She smiled. “I think it’s the cords we need to be most concerned about. We don’t want Shadow chewing on them like he does his toys. There’s the risk of electrical shock and then fire because of exposure. So, we’ll have to keep them out of his reach.”

“Ok, I think I have an idea that might work.” He went to his room and retrieved a rubber casing he had from a package he purchased for his bedroom. He showed it to her. “I have this rubber casing I bought from the hardware store. We could put it on the cord to avoid chewy issues and not create a fire hazard. It’s an extra one from a package I got for my game console in my bedroom, so I thought to use it here too! I’m glad I thought to get a multi pack so we’d have it in time for Christmas!” Michael grinned big.

“That’s genius, Michael! Shadow won’t be able to chew through that.”

“No, I don’t think so! They are specifically available for just such an occasion.” Micheal moved his eyebrows up and down, being goofy. Suzie laughed out loud.

“Ok, then, we’ll get the Christmas lights out to put on the tree to get started. And Shadow will be safe, thanks to you.” Suzie patted Michael on the back. Shadow came down the hallway just at that moment and meowed.

“Hey, buddy! You’ll be electrically safe this year even with the Christmas lights!” Shadow rubbed against Michael’s leg in approval.”Yes, we will avoid a Christmas Cat-astrophe!”

“That was very well put!” Suzie winked at Michael and gave Shadow a scratch behind the ears.
