Electrical Safety: An Extension Cord Extra

Bill’s Quality Electric, LLC shares an an electrical safety tip to help avoid electrical fires and keep you sane during the holidays at the same time.

Today I’m sharing a word about extension cords, those trusted electrical components that are great when you are in need of some extra room to connect to power where there isn’t an outlet when you need one.

This can be an especially active scenario during the holidays when you want to plug in a myriad of items needing power to decorate just so, to make your heart happy with lots of lights, color and action for Christmas Morning.

    Here’s the deal.

Extension cords are for temporary use, and if they aren’t put in a good place, that can shorten the life of thus said electrical component and lead to electrical fires.

Yes, those Christmas tree lights are not going to hang around forever, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared, and by that, meaning, having enough power for all of your decorating needs and wants, which can also be applied to other times when you want to brighten things up in your interior.

So, the best solution to this extension cord dilemma?

Have an outlet (or two or three) added by a licensed electrician. (If you live in the Collin County area of North Texas, just give us a call at 214.697.3134.) This way you will always have power where you need it most any time of year. No more need for extension cords coming to the rescue when you’ve got what you need where you need it.

Give it some thought: Where do you use extension cords the most, especially for longer than is recommended? Then plan to have those new outlets added as soon as possible, since this will decrease your risk of electrical fires.

Oh, and what can lead to those fires?

Extension cords placed under carpets, under furniture where it can be “pinched,” thus breaking the protective outer lining and exposing those wires, which can also lead to electric shock for both humans and pets.

And speaking of pets, they are less likely to get into chewing trouble with extension cords if there’s an outlet there instead! Yep.

And depending on Where you want those outlets to go, there’s an outlet for that. Whether outdoors, where the weather outside can be frightful, or indoors, in your kitchen where there are wet areas, or in your living room, or even in the bath where you like to decorate to keep it looking pretty.

Is it time to add those electrical components before you decorate for your holiday pleasure? Take action today and Stay Electrically Safe and Smart!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from Bill’s Quality Electric, LLC!
